This poster marks one of my early environmental pieces, which takes aim at Baltimore's coal exports. The entire premise was to get young people to vote so we could shut down the second largest coal port on the East Coast. By providing statistics it wouldn't just be an appeal to emotion, it would also give you hard numbers as to why voting on this issue really matters.
The wider image of the city in the background provides a nice contrast against the massive coal pile which the poster targets. It gives people something to look at and actually shows them that there is an issue they can focus on, it's not some hidden issue, its right there where they can see it.
The small spot illustrations serve to give the reader something to look at and think about as they read each individual statistic. At the time I didn't have images of the open top, hopper cars that transported coal by rail but by illustrating it I could change it to create an increased visual impact. It also serves to contrast the header image which sets the scene.
